But on to the purpose of this post. Many moons ago we signed up for a CSA. Community Supported Agriculture. For those of you that have gardens I'm sure you can appreciate the difference between a garden tomato :) and a store-bought tomato :/ We don't have the opportunity to have a great big garden like we'd like here in Boston, but that doesn't mean we can't get great fresh veggies!
CSAs are becoming more and more popular, especially in urban areas. People sign up before planting seasons for a "share" of the crop that year. You pay and then when the fruits of someone else's hard labor on a farm in the country nearby come up they start getting delivered!
In our case, we did some research and went with Red Fire Farm. The actual farm is about 90 minutes west of Boston. They deliver our share to a parking lot about 2 blocks from our apartment and we just go down on the delivery day and time and pick up our fresh, local, in-season, organic produce! What could be better?! (Yeah, I know, having our own garden would be better, but unless someone has about $2 million I can drop on a house and some land this is my best.)
This is our third pick up and I wanted to share with you what we got. Cooking with our new food has been really fun. We even tried a totally new vegetable - and loved it! Which is good considering how much we'll probably end up getting.
Can you tell what everything is? There's 11 types of vegetables or fruit. Bonus points if you can name all 11.
Part of our share is pick your own. So if we ever rent a car and go out to the farm we can pick even more fresh, local, in-season, organic food! Hopefully lots more stories about the CSA to come.
More info about local food and good for you food in Animal, Vegetable, Miracle - a book I HIGHLY recommend.
