Note to all Americans: When you have written the time of your first-ever tutoring session as 15h-17h be sure to take careful note of the "1"s at the beginning. In short, that means you need to arrive at 3 o'clock, not 5 o'clock.
This mistake was all mine. I didn't miss my session because my boss called me. I was supposed to be at her office as she had offered to drive me over to the school and go with me for my first day. At ten to 3 she called and asked where I was. Oh, and did I mention she was calling as I was sitting down to plan the lesson? I thought I had 2 hours, which is more than enough time to plan a lesson. Needless to say I threw things in a bag, threw shoes on (that in NO way matched anything else I was wearing) and broke human speed records on foot to where she was picking me up.
My boss was not a happy camper when I got in the car. This is a brand new client for her and she wants to make a good impression. It's also my first official job with her and one things they stress in Job and Grad School Search (an utterly ridiculous and time-wasting class my alma mater requires so they can justify someone's presence on campus) is NOT to ever be late, let alone on your first day.
After saying "Je suis tres desolee" approximately a billion and one times we arrived at the school where no one seemed to care. Then they took us back to the "room" I was to be using. As we walk in the building our guide points to a door and tells us it's the women's bathroom... since there are no women they keep it locked, but I can just ask for a key if I need it. Note to self: use bathroom before coming to class because if it's been locked and there aren't any women in the place I think we can all guess when the last time that bathroom was cleaned. (Answer: never) Then we walk through the shop. And by shop I mean as in high school shop class. There are tools and machinery I have never seen just lying about helter skelter. And then we enter the room. My boss is giving me a look that can only be described as a cross between I'm sorry, good luck, and oh s*!t. Great way to start, eh?
The class is made up of 7 guys and me. They range in age from 22 - 45 and their English skills are just as varied. Surprisingly it all went off rather well! I was able to pull enough material out of thin air to suffice and the guys were so nice and laid back that it all worked. It's a bit obvious that they aren't particularly interested in this English class and if I were older or more on the male side I don't think they'd be interested at all, but whatever works.
So that was my first class. No class next week, seeing as I'll be in Spain, but I can assure you that I'll be overly-prepared and about a year early for class in two weeks!!

WOW!!! I have actually done that a lot for appts.. I write down 13 h and I often mistake it for 3 pm instead of 1 pm. I know that IS a horror to be late on your first day but it sounds like it all went well in the end... Hopefully, the guys will become more enthusiastic as the lessons continue.. Bon courage!!!

I wish the French would just choose between 24 and 12 hour clocks, the trouble happens when people switch back and forth, and my poor little brain just can't handle it! I vote the entire world goes 24 hour, but stay with feet and pounds. I'll never get the hand of grams, so there has to be compromise somewhere!
Wow! Sounds like you worked well under pressure! Go you! It took me ages to get used to 24 hour clock, I can only understand it if I see it written down..
