Last Weekend

It's taken me a week to get to this blog. I can't believe it. This past week has been crazy at work and at home and last weekend was quite the adventure.

J and I went back to Ohio for his brother's wedding. Talk about culture shock. Now that we've lived in New England and a big city for over 8 months going back to rural Ohio makes for some pretty startling culture shock moments. It's too quiet. How do people sleep without the sound of the T and traffic and sirens and drunk college students? There's nothing to do. Without major cultural events going on everywhere it seems kind of boring.

Luckily the wedding spiced things up for us. It was a rather unique wedding. Jared's brother and his new wife decided to go with a Harley Davidson themed ceremony and reception. I definitely haven't been to a wedding quite like it before.

I was asked to be the official photographer at the wedding. I think I did ok, but I forgot to fix a few settings on my camera and I really would have loved to have a DSLR, but all things come in good time. You can check out all the photos I took at http://JacobBethHardesty.shutterfly.com

Here's a nice Hardesty family portrait. Doesn't J look damn sexy in that suit coat? (Yes, he made me say that... he barely took the thing off all weekend he loves it so much!)

The day after the wedding we met my family in Columbus for a nice leisurely lunch at the Columbus Fish Market, which I highly recommend. It was great to see them! I even got to see my little sister's dorm room at OSU! The only bad part about being gone for the weekend was that it's the biggest weekend in Boston outside the 4th of July. It was Marathon Weekend! Something close to 50,000 people flood in to Boston to run and cheer as crazy people finish a 26.2 mile course. While I unfortunately missed the running expo and several other awesome events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, we were home in time for me to see the marathon on Monday! Part of the course runs about 1/2 mile from our apartment so I watched the start on TV and when the first group of runners hit Newton I headed down to the course... with everyone else in a 5 mi radius of the course.

I staked out a spot at mile 23 to watch the elite women and men fly by.

That's Kara Goucher in front in the pink top and black shorts. I cheered so loud for her! She's amazing. Unfortunately she didn't win, but she still placed 3rd, which is the highest and American woman has finished since I was born!! Good luck next year Kara!!!
Then the elite men flew past us. The first place runner was so far ahead that we almost didn't see him. He was drafting off the pace car and everyone else was a good 1/2 mile behind him. Crazy! But here's Ryan Hall (the caucasian runner). Ironically he also placed 3rd in the men's race!
Nothing inspires you (or makes to feel fat, lazy and totally unaccomplished) like seeing a man with no legs at the 23 mile mark in a marathon. The two guys with him aren't even competing in the race, they're his "guides" to make sure he's ok through the whole thing. All three of them are in amazing shape because they sped past. The guides were really cool and got the crowd worked up. The guy got quite the cheering from everyone. It was pretty cool.
Then it was back to work on Tuesday to make up for everything I missed on Friday last week and then registration starts. For anyone else who has ever worked at a college or university, you know what this means. For those of you who haven't it's utter chaos, lots of panic, and from the side of the Counseling Center, lots of meltdowns. So you can imagine it's been just an awesome week. *sarcasm intended* This weekend's weather is fantastic, 80 degrees and sunny so I'm headed out! Catch you later!
